Marbella with Kids: A Practical Family Holiday Guide (2026)

Is Marbella good for families? Our own numbers answer that: in 2025, families made up 47% of the guests who stayed in the apartments we manage, far ahead of groups of friends, couples or business travellers. The Marbella of yachts and beach-club parties is real, but so is the Marbella of calm beaches with lifeguards, big parks, safari parks and early-evening ice creams on the promenade.

This guide is what we tell the families who stay with us: what is worth doing with children in and around Marbella, drive times from Puerto Banús, what it costs in 2026, which places have closed (several guides still list them), and the practical things you only think about once you are here: meal times, heat, car seats and where the paediatric emergency departments are.

Family beaches

Marbella has eight Blue Flag beaches in 2026, and lifeguards work every day from 1 June to 30 September (11:00–20:00 in high season). For young children, look for gentle water, facilities and a playground nearby:

• Casablanca (Golden Mile): wide golden sand, Blue Flag, restaurants with sunbeds.
• La Fontanilla and El Faro (centre): calm water, Blue Flags, playground at El Faro, and the promenade for a stroll afterwards.
• El Cable (east of the centre): fine sand, fewer people, Blue Flag.
• San Pedro de Alcántara: a long promenade with a playground and chiringuitos, popular with local families.

Free parks and playgrounds in Marbella

• Parque Arroyo de la Represa: Marbella’s largest playground after a full remodel, with an adapted play area, duck and turtle ponds, and the Bonsai Museum at one end.
• Parque de la Alameda and Avenida del Mar: shady gardens and fountains leading down to the beach past ten bronze Dalí sculptures. Perfect for an evening walk.
• Parque de la Constitución: central, with a playground and an open-air auditorium that hosts summer shows.
• Parque de Nagüeles: a fenced pine forest in the foothills of Sierra Blanca with a playground, picnic tables and barbecue areas. Cooler than the coast on hot days.

Days out with kids from Marbella

Prices are 2026 adult / child ticket prices from the official websites where available. Most attractions offer a small discount online and change prices by season, so check before you go. Drive times are from Puerto Banús without traffic.

Boat trips of two to two and a half hours leave from the marina, usually from around €45 per person, with child life jackets. Morning trips have the calmest sea. Reputable operators are honest that sightings are likely but never guaranteed.

Caminito del Rey: check the age limit first

The famous cliff walkway, about 1 h 15 from Marbella, has a strict minimum age of 8, and staff check original ID. Children who are too young are refused entry and tickets are not refunded. Under-18s must be accompanied by an adult. It is a great day out for older children; for younger ones, choose something else.

Gibraltar with kids

Children love the Barbary macaques on the Upper Rock. Two things have changed: the cable car closed in November 2025 for a rebuild, expected to reopen around 2027, so go up by minibus tour or taxi; and the land border has been transformed under the new EU–UK agreement. Carry passports for everyone in any case. Never feed the apes: fines are steep, and they bite.

Closed: don’t plan around these

• Funny Beach (Marbella) closed in 2016 and the site is now a beach club. Its karting has a successor, Funny Hill, on the Ojén road.
• Tivoli World (Benalmádena) has been closed since 2020. A redevelopment is planned, but it will not reopen for several years.

Practical tips for families in Marbella

Meal times

Spaniards lunch around 14:00–15:00 and dine from about 21:00, and many restaurants close between services. In Puerto Banús and on the seafront, kitchens are more flexible, but for a relaxed dinner with young children, book for when the restaurant opens in the evening (around 20:00) or make lunch the main meal. Children are welcome in restaurants at any hour here; you will see Spanish families out late in summer.

Heat and sun

August is the hottest month, with average highs around 29 °C and more on still days. Do the beach in the morning, retreat to shade or a pool between 14:00 and 17:00, and go out again in the evening, as locals do. Hats, high-factor sun cream and water at all times.

Car seats

Spanish law requires children up to 135 cm tall to travel in an approved child seat suited to their size, and in the rear seats as a general rule. Book seats with your hire car or transfer in advance; in high season they run out.

Doctors, pharmacies and emergencies

• Emergencies: call 112.
• Hospital Universitario Costa del Sol (public, Marbella): A&E with a paediatric area.
• Hospital Quirónsalud Marbella (private): 24-hour paediatric emergency department for children up to 14.
• HC Marbella International Hospital (private, close to Puerto Banús): 24-hour A&E and a paediatrics department.
• Pharmacies: every area has a duty pharmacy (farmacia de guardia) open at night; the rota is posted on every pharmacy door.

If you have travel insurance, check which private hospitals it covers before you need one.

Best time to visit with children

June and September are the sweet spot: warm sea, long days, lifeguards on duty and noticeably fewer people than in the UK and Spanish school holidays (late July to the end of August). Bear in mind that the water parks close in September. October half term is also a good option for the zoo, parks and day trips.

Where to stay in Marbella with kids

For families, a holiday apartment usually beats a hotel room: separate bedrooms so the children can sleep while you sit on the terrace, a kitchen for breakfasts and snacks, a washing machine, and a communal pool in a gated urbanization. Near Puerto Banús, beachside urbanizations such as Playa Rocío and Playas del Duque put you a short walk from the sand and the marina but away from the port’s nightlife. Nueva Andalucía and San Pedro are calmer still.

By day, very: the marina, the boats, ice creams and the beach are a hit with children. At night the port belongs to the nightlife crowd, so families usually prefer to sleep a few minutes away, in a beachside urbanization or in Nueva Andalucía.

What is there to do in Marbella with toddlers?

Keep it simple: calm beaches such as La Fontanilla or Casablanca in the morning, the playgrounds at Arroyo de la Represa or San Pedro’s promenade in the evening, and an easy day out to Selwo Aventura or Bioparc, where under-3s go free.

Can children do the Caminito del Rey?

Only from the age of 8, with ID, and accompanied by an adult. The rule is strictly enforced.
