It is a 27-kilometre stretch of coast with a marina town, a whitewashed old quarter, a golf valley, a quiet family town and a string of dune beaches, and where you sleep decides what kind of holiday you get. Pick the wrong base and you spend your week in taxis or lying awake at 4am listening to the port empty out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We run holiday apartments from Puerto Ban\u00fas, and \u00ab\u00a0which area should we stay in?\u00a0\u00bb is the question we answer most before a booking. It opened in 1970 and now has 915 berths, with superyachts moored a few metres from the designer boutiques on the waterfront. Around it you have El Corte Ingl\u00e9s (with a Hipercor supermarket, useful for self-catering), the Dal\u00ed rhinoceros sculpture, and the beaches of Puerto Ban\u00fas, Playa Roc\u00edo and Playas del Duque either side of the port.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Who it suits:<\/strong> first-time visitors, groups of friends, anyone who wants restaurants, bars and the beach within a short walk. It has the liveliest nightlife on the coast (our <a href=\"\/nightlife-marbella-ultimate-guide\/\">Marbella nightlife guide<\/a> covers where to go).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Getting around:<\/strong> you can do everything on foot. The L-1 bus runs San Pedro \u2013 Puerto Ban\u00fas \u2013 Marbella centre every 20\u201330 minutes, and taxis wait by the port.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The honest downsides:<\/strong> it is busy and it is not cheap. The port gets around five million visitors a year, drinks cost more than in town, and if your apartment faces the marina itself you will hear it on summer weekends. Parking on summer evenings is hard unless you arrive before 8pm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Our tip:<\/strong> stay one or two streets back from the port or in one of the gated urbanizations next to the beach. You keep the five-minute walk to the marina and lose the noise. The Golden Mile: for couples, beach clubs and a calmer luxury<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Golden Mile (Milla de Oro) is the roughly five-kilometre strip between Marbella centre and Puerto Ban\u00fas. It is where the Marbella Club Hotel opened in 1954 and where Puente Romano was built around an actual Roman bridge. Behind the beachfront you have the King Abdul Aziz Mosque and the Ralli Museum (free entry), with La Concha mountain as the backdrop to everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Who it suits:<\/strong> couples, beach-club days and people who want to be close to the action without sleeping in it. Playa Nag\u00fceles has fine sand and shallow water, which also works for families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Getting around:<\/strong> you can walk to the beach, but not to much else. Walking from the centre to Puerto Ban\u00fas takes well over an hour, so plan on taxis, the bus or a car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The honest downsides:<\/strong> it is the most expensive area of Marbella, and the main road (the old N-340) that runs through it is busy. Below it, the Alameda park and the Avenida del Mar (with its bronze Dal\u00ed sculptures) lead straight to the <a href=\"\/marbella-seafront-promenade\/\">seafront promenade<\/a> and the town beaches of La Venus and La Fontanilla, about ten minutes&rsquo; walk away. It is also where your euro goes furthest in restaurants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Getting around:<\/strong> the most walkable area in Marbella. Buses and taxis connect it to Puerto Ban\u00fas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The honest downsides:<\/strong> parking in the centre is limited, regulated and slow in summer. The town beaches are busy in high season, and the Old Town&rsquo;s narrow lanes do not suit large groups or big luggage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Nueva Andaluc\u00eda: for golfers and longer, quieter stays<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Directly inland from Puerto Ban\u00fas, Nueva Andaluc\u00eda is known as the Golf Valley: Las Brisas, Los Naranjos, Aloha and La Quinta are all here (our <a href=\"\/top-10-best-golf-courses-in-marbella\/\">Marbella golf guide<\/a> compares them). The lower part of the valley is a few minutes&rsquo; drive, and in places a walk, from the port. On Saturday mornings there is a popular market by Centro Plaza.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Who it suits:<\/strong> golfers, families who want space and a pool, remote workers and anyone staying a week or more. You sleep in quiet and are at the marina in five minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Getting around:<\/strong> the valley is hilly. San Pedro de Alc\u00e1ntara: for families and a real Andalusian town<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just west of Puerto Ban\u00fas, about ten minutes by car, San Pedro is part of Marbella but feels like its own town. The Boulevard, a linear park built over the old coast road, has play areas and a skate park, and the tiled seafront promenade with its chiringuitos connects to the one that runs all the way to Marbella. Its main beach and Guadalmina beach are wide and less crowded than those near the port.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Who it suits:<\/strong> families, longer stays and anyone who wants local prices and Spanish daily life within reach of Puerto Ban\u00fas. Elviria and Los Monteros are low-rise residential areas, and at Cabopino the Dunas de Artola natural monument protects a stretch of real sand dunes crossed by a wooden boardwalk, next to a small marina with seafood restaurants. Nikki Beach and several golf courses (Santa Mar\u00eda, Marbella Golf, Santa Clara) are in this part of town. Cabopino is also the closest of these areas to M\u00e1laga airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Who it suits:<\/strong> families and couples who want quiet, nature and space, and are happy to drive into town for dinner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Getting around:<\/strong> spread out. In practice you need a car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The honest downsides:<\/strong> it is 15\u201325 minutes from Puerto Ban\u00fas and its nightlife. Part of Cabopino beach is a naturist area, worth knowing before you choose a spot with children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hotel or holiday apartment?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most \u00ab\u00a0where to stay\u00a0\u00bb guides only list hotels. For stays of more than a couple of nights, and for families or groups, a holiday apartment usually works better: a kitchen for breakfasts and late snacks, a terrace, a washing machine, separate bedrooms, and often a communal pool and gardens in a gated urbanization. The trade-off is service. A good managed apartment closes that gap with a proper check-in, cleaning and someone who answers the phone. In 2025, families made up 47% of the guests who stayed with us, which tells you who apartments suit best.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whatever you book, check three things: which way the terrace faces (sea, pool or road), whether parking is included, and exactly how far the walk to the beach is. The listing photos rarely tell you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Frequently asked questions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is it better to stay in Marbella or Puerto Ban\u00fas?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Puerto Ban\u00fas is part of Marbella, so the real question is port or old town. Choose Puerto Ban\u00fas for nightlife, shopping and the marina; choose the Old Town and centre for history, walkable streets, local restaurants and lower prices. They are 10\u201315 minutes apart by car or bus, so you can easily visit the other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where is the party area in Marbella?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Puerto Ban\u00fas, followed by the beach clubs on the Golden Mile. The Old Town has a livelier bar scene than people expect, but the late clubs are around the port.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where should families stay in Marbella?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">San Pedro de Alc\u00e1ntara, Nueva Andaluc\u00eda and East Marbella are the calmest. If you want to be near the port without the noise, choose a gated beachside urbanization with a pool just west of Puerto Ban\u00fas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do you need a car in Marbella?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not if you stay in Puerto Ban\u00fas or the Old Town: both are walkable and connected by the L-1 bus. In Nueva Andaluc\u00eda, the Golden Mile and East Marbella a car makes life much easier, and it is essential for day trips inland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How far is Marbella from M\u00e1laga airport?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About 50\u201360 km depending on the area, roughly 30\u201345 minutes by car on the AP-7 toll motorway.
